Creative writing can be an intimidating endeavor. It can be frustrating to make your writing artistic and interesting Screen Shot 2016-03-18 at 7.14.38 AMwithout sounding like you’re trying too hard to have that effect. Here are 6 great tips to make creative writing effortless and have words seemingly flow out of you.

Read Authors Whose Style You Enjoy

They say good artists, but great artists steal. Get inspired by authors whose styles you like and try to emulate them. Start by practicing writing in their style, then try to inflect elements of their style into your writing. If you can harness their stylistic tendencies, you’ll be able wield an interesting variety of moods in your own writing.

Break Out a Thesaurus

If you’re feeling like you keep recycling the same words, don’t be afraid to take advantage of resources to help spice up your wording. Even if you don’t find exactly what you’re looking for, likelihood is you’ll stumble across many interesting words you may want to use later.

Deliberately Use Literary Techniques

Be conscious of what techniques you’re employing when you write. Some simple ones are simile, alliteration, rhyming, metaphor, and analogy. These few are easy to learn but difficult to master. Make an effort to vary what techniques you use to make your writing more interesting.

Don’t Make Your Writing Overly Verbose

When first staring to write, one may be tempted to write flowery, run-on sentences in an effort to sound sophisticated. This can work to the opposite effect many times. Practice getting ideas across in as few words as possible. There’s a certain charm in minimalist writing.

Observe Creative Writing Around You

Try to describe everything you see in a creative way, even go as far as narrating scenes from your everyday life in your head. This will give you practice in extracting interesting perspectives and ways of describing typically uninteresting events. Not only will this flex your creative writing muscles, but may even inspire you with a new subject for your next piece.

Share Your Writing With Others

Ultimately your writing will be read by others, so why not get their feedback? Having a fresh set of eyes see your work can add new perspectives and give you an idea of how your authorial voice comes across. It would even be a good idea to participate in different creative writing contests. This can be a great avenue to help you share your work with others.

Creative writing is a discipline that’s hard to get the hang of. It takes a lot of practice, but after some time the process will become easy. Creative writing definitely doesn’t come naturally to everyone, but with these tips you’ll be well on your way to distinguishing yourself as an author.
