How Reading Books Regularly Can Help Grads Achieve Success

Mar 14, 2016 | Parents, Students

Busy lives often seem to leave little time for reading, and this is particularly true as the internet and social media now takes all the free time we have available to do the things we truly enjoy. However reading books has been shown to be beneficial for a wide variety of reasons, and new grads in particular should know that cuddling up with a good book might help improve their intellectual abilities and boost their academic potential.

Student Caring & Reading

The perfect escape

No matter how difficult or stressful life is, curling up with a good book can help you to escape and forget about your problems for a short while. Whilst your mind is busy exploring new worlds, your brain can take a well deserved break. You will actually feel refreshed after reading! New grads should read self-help books or novels that motivate them to strive for more. Make it a passion, not a chore and give your brain a break from information that is college-related.

Imagination

Reading allows your imagination to run wild. Even the best books can only build a partial view of their universe; you must fill in the gaps to create a believable alternative reality in which you can immerse yourself. Reading actually helps build your imagination, thus foster new ideas that can come in handy on your next exam.

Improved knowledge

Reading has been shown to expand your vocabulary and improve your grammar and use of language. This is because a book can expose you to words and phrases you may not otherwise have known about. It will, of course, also expand your knowledge of the world around you; both present and past.

Development

Books are generally written by people who have exceptionally creative minds, creating a story from nothing and crafting it to appeal to your mind and invite you in. By reading books you can open your own mind up to these creative powers and improve your own ability to be creative. It also helps you to explore an alternative view point and appreciate how other people think and feel. Developing your empathy and knowledge of others is a powerful tool which can be developed by reading other people’s works and evaluating them.

Book reading makes you a great leader

Research shows that leaders and other successful people generally read a lot of books. This is because a book can enlighten and transform your outlook on life, setting you onto a new path that you may not have previously considered. The information you gain from reading can also be utilized to help you achieve a position of power and success. However, it is also an opportunity to relax, enjoy an easy read and even laugh; all important things for humans to do regularly.

Open your mind

Reading regularly can prevent you from getting stuck in the same old routines, day after day. A good book will allow you to see other possibilities; it will expand your mind spiritually and mentally allowing you to appreciate other people’s perspective. Reading also requires you to focus on one thing for a period of time; this can be a very effective way to improve your ability to focus. This skill is essential in all walks of life.

Reading improves general health, thus making new grads happier

It may surprise you to know that reading has actually been shown to be good for your health. Reading before going to sleep helps to sooth the mind and allows you to sleep better. The mental stimulation caused by reading will help to keep your brain active; improving your memory an ability to concentrate. Reading is also an excellent way to de-stress, this is important to allow your body time to relax and heal itself. Too much stress has been linked with a variety of diseases such as heart problems, diabetes and even cancer.

Reading expands your horizons and helps you solve problems faster

Reading is actually an excellent way of solving an issue! You may not know how to deal with a particular problem, but a book can show you a solution or give you an idea which can be adapted to work for your personal situation.

Reading is an essential tool that new grads should find time for. It will help them grow spiritually, mentally and it will diversify their vocabulary. The more you read the more knowledgeable you become. This will transform your college life into a memorable experience!
