How to Get More Volunteer Work on Your Resume While Still in School

Sep 4, 2016 | Students

While a college education is a great way to set yourself up to succeed, it may not be enough to get your dream job. The job market is extremely competitive for upcoming college graduates, so you need something on your resume to help you stand out from everyone else. Volunteering is a great way show your potential employers that you are interested in helping others and have experience in working in different industries. These are the four best ways to get more volunteer work on your resume while still in school.

How to Get More Volunteer Work on Your Resume While Still in School

Join a Volunteer Group at School
Every college or university has a volunteer group for people interested in helping others in the area. You will not have to worry about finding the right place to go to volunteer because the school group will handle all the details for you. There is also a good chance you will volunteer at several organizations throughout the year through these options, which will help you learn multiple new skills.

Help Out Your Church
Churches are always looking for extra help. If you already attend a church in the area, then you can ask them about their volunteer opportunities. If you do not regularly go to church, then it should not be too hard to find one near your school. Volunteering at a church may involve organizing events or cleaning up after service. Places like the Union Gospel Mission in Twin Cities even run their own shelters and programs for the homeless. All you need is to set aside some time to volunteer and you already have a great addition to your resume.

Go to a Local Shelter
Every major city has a shelter designed to help the people or animals in the area, and they are always looking for reliable volunteers. An animal shelter will let you take care of abandoned and abused pets before trying to find them a new home. A homeless shelter provides the homeless community in the area with food and a safe place to sleep at night. If you go to a city-run shelter you might also find other opportunities to volunteer as a citizen for events in the area.

Tutoring
School is not always easy for everyone, and you can spend some of your free time helping your fellow students with their studies. You will most likely need pretty good grades to qualify as a tutor at your school. If you are unable to tutor students, then you can always go to a local primary or secondary school. There are never enough teachers in public schools, and they are always looking for college students to help tutor the kids.

The willingness to help others is an essential trait that more people need in the working world. Even if you start out volunteering as a way to build your resume, you will get far more out of the experience than you ever expected.
