How to Stand Out in Your Management Career

Aug 9, 2015 | Students

There is intense competition for the best management roles these days, so if you’re to shine in your career, you’ll need to really pull out all the stops. One way to get ahead in this field is to take advantage of any relevant training opportunities. There are a host of qualifications on offer and by enhancing your CV in this way, you can ensure you stand out in the eyes of current or future employers. Here are four areas to focus on when you’re seeking to strengthen your profile.

1) Health and safety

Health and safety is an area that no business can afford to ignore. By implementing effective risk management policies, companies can keep their workers safe, avoid potentially costly and damaging legal action and help to protect their reputations. With this in mind, it pays off to supplement your CV with health and safety qualifications. For example, the NEBOSH Certificate in the Management of Health and Well-Being at Work could be a good option for you. According to the safety specialists Sheilds, this course is a must for people whose work involves protecting the wellbeing of employees.

2) Team leading

Team leading is another essential skill for managers. In these senior roles, you’ll need to be able to guide the actions of groups of employees to ensure you collectively meet the objectives of the companies you work for. Qualifications in team leading can cover a range of topics, including the role of leaders, how to communicate ideas effectively, planning and allocating work and measuring team performance.

3) Strategy

The ability to formulate effective strategies is also a must in the management field. In senior roles, you’ll be expected to develop and implement sound plans that promote the success of your firms and help to safeguard their futures. You can hone these skills by taking strategic direction courses that cover issues such as inter-organisational planning and direction, collective strategy development and strategic culture.

4) Mentoring and coaching

Taking qualifications in mentoring and coaching could give your career a boost too. After all, the best managers are those who succeed in getting the very best out of their teams by encouraging the development of personnel and nurturing their skills. Look out for courses that cover topics such as the operational processes involved in mentoring, how to coach individuals and teams and how to manage team dynamics.

By focussing on these four areas, you can show employers that you have the core skills required to manage effectively and you stand to boost your career prospects as a result. Getting extra qualifications does require you to invest time, energy and potentially money, but it should help you to stand out in your management career.
