Modifications to Make Your Dorm Room Feel Like Home

Nov 27, 2015 | Students

A dorm room can look and feel uninviting and uncomfortable all year unless you take steps to make it feel cozy, comfortable, and friendly. Use the ideas below to make your dorm room an efficient place to study area and a comfortable place to relax.

The Bed
It has become quite trendy to create a loft bed in a dorm room, and if this is something you are permitted to do, it’s the ideal starting point for a dorm room transformation. When you raise the bed, you can use the space underneath as a sitting area, or as a place for your desk.
Getting a sufficient amount of sleep is essential for your brain to function at its optimum level and for you to feel energized. If the bed in your dorm isn’t comfortable, you can add a mattress pad. To give your room a home-like feeling, choose attractive, colorful, or themed bedding that reminds you of home.

Furniture

Arrange the furniture in your room so it functions effectively for you. Be sure your room has a designated study area that has good lighting and a comfortable seat. Add accessories to this area that will help the space stay organized. You should also design a place that is solely for relaxation, whether that’s a bean bag, a small chair, or just a corner with some pillows.

Photos
A folding panel picture screen could be used to separate space in your room. It would also provide you with a place to display photos. Adding pictures of family members, pets, friends, and past vacations can help you feel a connection to home, regardless of how far away you may be. You can also hang pictures on the wall or place them on a bookcase or desk.

Aromas
Familiar scents can ignite a multitude of memories, and scented candles are available in an extensive variety of aromas. There may be restrictions in some dorms regarding the use of candles, but there are other options for making your space smell like home. Diffusers, potpourri, and air fresheners in scents such as spiced apple, vanilla, fresh linen or ocean breeze can bring some of your favorite scents into your dorm room.

Windows
New blinds or Sunburst shutters can immediately update a dorm decor or give it a clean, fresh appearance. If you want to soften the appearance of your windows, simply drape a piece of fabric, or even some colorful scarves across a rod at the top of the window. Shutters can add sophistication and privacy to a room.

Plants
Plants can make your dorm room feel like home, and having something green and alive can energize the atmosphere of the room. Some plants, such as the peace lily, spider plant, Dracaena, and English ivy, are known as air purifiers and would be beneficial for any student. Be sure to choose plants that thrive in the type of lighting your room receives. If you’re concerned about your ability to grow plants, a collection of small cacti might be a good option for you.

Bring a Piece of Home with You

Nothing can personalize your dorm room more than tangible mementos from home. Bring some of your favorite books and music, a favorite pillow, an accent rug, a poster, or wall words from your bedroom to your dorm.

With a few simple modifications, your dorm room can feel like home. Once the decor reflects your personality, your room can be a comfortable place to study and relax.
