The digital advertising market is big and it is global. In the recent past with all sorts of technological advancements, the world of digital marketing has moved from being an auxiliary form of advertising to taking center stage as the main form of advertising. The traditional forms of advertising like TV, radio and print are all going digital in keeping with the times; a testament to how big this market really is.

Just so we are all on the same page, let us be clear on what digital advertising means. Digital advertising involves advertisements created by computers and then communicated to the target demographic by the same computers.

The digital advertising world has created many opportunities for employment. You have the interactive designers that are the creative people, and then you have the digital advertising planners and buyers who are creative as well, albeit in a different way. You also have the social media marketers or search engine marketers that are the analytical people and the advertising coordinators who are the links between all these departments that make sure everything is running according to plan.

A college degree is required but experience will give you the extra edge. Get some internships while at school, whether for the college or another company. If you cannot get one, create your own marketing project or enter a marketing contest.

Regardless of the department you end up in, you need to know what people around you are saying. Learn the industry lingo (the Internet is a good place to start) so that you are not caught off guard by a simple question because you did not get the jargon.

You need to know the industry players and build relationships both online and offline. You can do this by going for as many digital advertising meetings and conferences as you can and using the opportunity to learn more about the industry and get your name out there.

  1. Tech-savvy

While you will not be doing the actual coding, it is important for you to understand what it is all about in order to create a campaign within the limits of the specific programming language. Do not worry… you only need a basic understanding not a degree in software engineering.

You also need to know about the workings of the latest hardware developments in advertising. For instance, you should know about the development and use of the digital menu board in the food industry, and think up ways in which you may improve on their current use.

  1. Stay interested

The greatest motivator for learning is an interest in your subject. You need to be passionate and curious about the on-goings of the digital marketing world. Curiosity will also help you generate interesting new solutions that can benefit an online campaign; and you know innovation is a great asset to have in an employee.
