What happens when you take a job after graduation and find that it is not the career path that you want to go further? Though this is not common, it happens to some and they feel that they have hit the brakes on their dreams. If you feel like that you want to make a career change but are unsure as you do not have the right skills, this article is just right for you.

As someone who has changed my profession from engineering to a full-time content marketer, I can really associate this situation with myself. It is not easy to convince the interviewers about why I chose this career path and if I can perform well in this area. But, with great determination everything is possible.

Everyone has their own notion of a dream job. So a dream job is not necessarily a career in one of the biggest names in the industry. One might be interested in a simple job that pays well enough but provides complete job satisfaction. Sometimes it may be just some interest or passion that you want pursue as a profession. Here are some of the tips that will help you to make that change or get that “Dream Job” even if you do not have any experience in that field:

Step 1: Check out if your skills are transferrable

First of all understand the type of dream job you want. Take the help of people who are already working in that field to have a deeper understanding of the work. This will help you to know the skills which are necessary to make a change to that field.

The best way to get your dream job is to know the skills associated with it and then research how your current skills can be transferred. This will help you a lot and make it easy for you while applying for a job.

Suppose you are software developer who wants to work in advertising, then you need to show the skills you learned from your web development career which can be applied in an advertising career. Did you have a flair for creativity as a web development? You can help the advertising agency with your out of the box thinking.

Step 2: Build your bridge

Do not have transferrable skills as well? Do not panic! You can still be able to get your dream job. There are two ways you can achieve that – making an extra effort to learn new things and persistent networking. In both methods you need to build bridges that will connect you to the other world where your dream job is.

Focus on the skills that you can easily learn. Basic skills can be learned without much effort and there are nowadays a lot of e-learning websites online from which you can learn in details.

Networking is the one that will complete your bridge to your new career path. It is a game changer when it comes to getting a new job. Sometimes even good networking trumps excellent skills for a certain job profile. If you know someone who is already working in that job, that person can convince the hiring manager that you are the right person for the job. Of course, your preparation and determination are also needed in addition to that.

Step 3: Redefine your resume

Resume is the gateway to your interviews. That is why one needs to make sure that the resume is perfect for the job that is being applied for. It is important to remember that you should not use the same resume that you used for your previous job. If you want to make a career change, you must be careful to include those skills which are applicable for the new job.

Step 4: Start pitching your potential

Nobody will understand that you have the potential to do well in the new job, if you cannot convince them (the interviewers, the hiring managers, or even your networking circle). Understand the position that you are applying for very well before shooting a resume. Check out which skills you already have and which you can get accustomed to easily.

Also, you need to start applying in order to get a chance. Put your resume on a job site or start forwarding your resume to your networking circle. Without proactive application for jobs, you cannot come to point of pitching your potential.

Step 5: Relax and be patient

Most importantly, you need to be relaxed while making the transition. You will not gain anything by making haste or panicking if things are not going your way. Making a change in a job is a tough thing, and when it comes to your career, it is a lot tougher. So just relax, keep doing what you are doing with patience and search for opportunities.

Getting your dream job is not always easy. As you can see from the above points, you need to be determined and move forward with a lot of patience.
