Important Strategies To Cover JEE Main Syllabus: How it is Easier Than Expected

Apr 9, 2019 | Students

The JEE Main syllabus requires a comprehensive understanding of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and its application studied from Class VI onwards. An engineering aspirant who wishes to crack the JEE Mains must be thorough with their concepts and must focus on a practical and problem-solving approach rather than rote learning. If the concepts of science are dealt like this from the beginning, clearing JEE or any other engineering entrance exam is not difficult.

On a first glance, the JEE Main syllabus may look extremely vast and may discourage students at the first step, but with proper planning and good time management, any task is attainable. The following 5 strategies can help every engineering aspirant to cover their JEE Main syllabus with ease:

Know the JEE Main Syllabus Thoroughly

The JEE Mains syllabus is quite broad and covers the concepts of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics studied from Class VI to Class XII. Before you dive into the JEE Mains preparation, understand and go through what all it entails. This will help you in drawing out a study schedule and understanding which topics to focus on more from the exam point of view.

Draw out a week-by-week Study Plan for Each Month

If you have, say, 3 months left for your JEE Mains, then a good strategy would be to draw out a weekly study schedule at the end of every week. This study schedule should include a mixture of topics you are most comfortable with, topics you need help understanding from your peers/teaching faculty, topics you haven’t covered at all and mock tests and previous year papers. If you don’t consider yourself as a planner or someone who has never drawn out weekly study schedules, then start with assigning simpler topics for your first week or lesser number of study hours and increase it gradually by at least two hours every week. Past toppers and achievers have time and again said that the JEE Main syllabus is not difficult to cover, it is the question paper which can be tricky.

Work on your Speed and Accuracy

The challenge every competitive exam candidate faces is completing the examination or attempting all the questions within the given duration. The JEE Mains is no different. The key to scoring in the JEE Mains is good time management. What differentiates the successful students from those who aren’t is enough practice solving questions and attempting mock tests within the given time. To improve the speed and accuracy in subjects like Physics and Mathematics, solve the same/similar type of question repeatedly and note the time taken when you attempted the question the first time how much time it took you the last time. This will not only reduce the amount of time you take to solve the question but also strengthen your concepts and you would have devised a full-proof method to solve the question if asked in the JEE Mains.

Avoid using a calculator while preparing for the JEE Mains

While you may be tempted to reach out to the calculator during your practice at home or at your coaching, avoid it. Train yourself to be adept at doing mental calculations. This will come in handy during the examination when you will not be allowed to use a calculator. This may be frustrating at the beginning, but as you proceed, you will get quicker.

Solve mock tests and previous years papers to get an understanding of what can be expected in the exam

Along with covering the JEE Mains syllabus, it is extremely important to solve as many mock tests as you can. Attempting mock tests must be in your study schedule from the first week of your JEE preparation. If you start by spending 5% of your study time towards mock tests and previous year papers when you successively cover your syllabus, you can increase the amount of time spent towards them. Eventually, as you near the last few weeks before the JEE Mains, you can spend 90% of your time doing tests and looking at previous year papers and use the remaining time to clear your concepts and doubts.

Every year only 2 lakh students proceed to the JEE Advanced stage from the 11 lakh students who sit for the JEE Mains, which is a success rate of 18%. A systematic approach to learning is what every JEE aspirant must follow to cover the JEE Mains syllabus and crack the exam with ease.

All the very best!
