For those who are passionate about sports, a career in the sports industry can be a dream job. While some careers offer part time work, others can be lucrative and turn into a full-time career. Get Involved and Play Sports

Most coaches, managers and scouts started their career playing sports. Understanding the rules of the game as a player can jump start your career in the sports industry. It also allows you to understand how each player on the team works.

Volunteer as a Coach or Player in Your Community

It’s important to get involved in the sports industry as early as possible. By coaching the community’s little league, soccer or football team can gain you valuable knowledge and experience. Although you’re not paid, it will show employers your dedication to the job and industry.

Get a Degree Related to Sports Management

Many colleges and universities offer a degree related to sports management. In many cases, employers such as schools, hire teachers to coach their sports teams. Earning a coaching master degree, education master degree or a similar discipline, such as athletic training, can increase employment opportunities.

Earn Credentials

State athletic associations, such as high schools and universities, generally require a state certification for coaching or involvement in athletics. They also require CPR and first-aid credentials. Earning these credentials can increase employment opportunities in the sports industry.

Work Hard, Play Hard

Jobs in sports management, such as coaches, scouts, agents and managers are expected to increase through 2022, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Although jobs are expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations, competition is expected for some of the highest paying jobs in the industry, such as managing and coaching college-level and professional athletes. Continuing to volunteer, coach and play for any sports-related associations will increase your knowledge and potentially get you recognized by a scout or employer.

Continue Your Education

Education and re-certification are critical to maintain many of the qualifications in the sports industry. Most credentials expire within two years and require additional coursework to maintain those credentials. Your credentials can be maintained through continuing education and retesting.

Working in the sports industry requires dedication and hard work. Those passionate about it can enjoy each phase of moving through the ranks, earning higher wages and making it a life-long career.
